England took third-place in FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015 after a 1-0 victory over Germany in the third-place final in Edmonton Saturday.

Fara Williams scored the lone goal, 108 minute penalty, in a match that needed extra-time after 90 scoreless minutes.

“Incredible result for the team,” said England’s head coach Mark Sampson after the match. “To bounce back from what was a real, real blow to us…incredibly proud of all players, all the staff.”

Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.

Third place is England’s best ever placing at the Women’s World Cup. Germany, ranked number one in the world by FIFA Women’s World Rankings, won the Women’s World Cup in 2003 and 2007.

England were diverted to the third-place playoff via a 2-1 loss to Japan on Tuesday. Germany ended up in Saturday’s match after losing Tuesday’s semi final against USA 1-0 in Montreal.

The Women’s World Cup final will be contested by last tournament’s winners and runners-up, Japan and USA, in Vancouver Sunday.
