Cavalry FC beat HFX Wanderers 2-0 in the Canadian Premier League at Spruce Meadows Saturday afternoon.

Elijah Adekugbe and Joel Waterman scored their first goals of the season in the second half to secure the three points for the hosts. The result places Calgary’s Cavalry FC atop the CPL fall season table for the time being, ahead of Hamilton’s Forge FC.

“I was a bit taken aback by it, I didn’t expect it,” said Cavalry FC midfielder Elijah Adekugbe on scoring his first-ever professional goal. “It’s a good feeling.

“I don’t score too often so I was a bit surprised. I don’t really know how to celebrate,” joked Adekugbe. “But I’m happy for it. And I’m happy the team won.”

Cavalry FC will next host Hamilton’s Forge FC Wednesday night. The match is one of two prequels to the CPL championship final series that the two clubs will contest Oct. 26 and Nov. 2.
