Cavalry FC signs Canadian forward José Hernández for the 2020 CPL season

Cavalry FC announced the signing of young Canadian forward José Hernández for the 2020 Canadian Premier League season Wednesday.

The 19-year-old spent the CPL’s inaugural season with Pacific FC, scoring one goal in 19 league appearances. The Vancouver Island club announced it was not re-signing the winger in November.

But Cavalry FC’s coach is hoping the Edmonton-born forward’s youth and pace will add to Cavalry FC’s already potent attack.

“José is an exciting young player to bring in to our squad that we feel has an incredible upside,” said Cavs manager Tommy Wheeldon Jr. via a club statement Wednesday. “He is a lightening quick attacker, with a great competitive edge and an eye for the goal.

“By José having already Canadian Premier League experience, is also an added advantage for a player that fits within the U21 domestic profile we were looking to bolster.”

Hernández spent time with the FC Edmonton and Vancouver Whitecaps academies before signing with pro club Pacific FC for 2019. He has also represented Canada at U17 and U20 levels. And Hernández believes Cavalry FC is another step forward in his career.

“Signing with Cavalry FC means a lot to me,” said Hernández via the club statement. “They (Cavalry FC) are a top team in the league and that encourages me to play at my best. Cavalry FC has a lot of experienced players that I am looking forward to meeting and learning from.”

Cavalry FC continues to meet with some members of the 2019 squad looking to sign for the club in 2020.
