0

The Canadian Premier League announced Wednesday it will hold a shortened 2020 season in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island beginning August 13.

The 2020 CPL season will feature a tournament format with a round robin first round. The top four teams will advance to the second round group stage which will be followed by the championship final between the top two teams. All matches will be held at the single venue, University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) Alumni Field.

All eight CPL clubs have returned to training and are expected to start arriving in Charlottetown the second week of August.

The CPL’s original 2020 season was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic back in March.

“We are excited about The Island Games/Canadian Premier League 2020 season and the level of support from the Government of P.E.I. and City of Charlottetown who have been at the forefront of all our planning with our priority being that every participant and P.E.I. citizens will be safe,” said CPL commissioner David Clanachan via a league statement Wednesday.

2019 CPL champion Forge FC will begin its title defence against 2019 finalists Cavalry FC August 13. All games will be shown on the subscription-based OneSoccer streaming site but Clanachan said the league is in negotiations with two “linear” Canadian broadcasters to show some matches on TV.
