Forge FC finds “killer instinct” in win over Pacific FC

Forge FC secured their first win of the 2021 Canadian Premier League season with a 3-0 victory over Pacific FC in Winnipeg Sunday night.

The two-time defending CPL champions had lost their first two games of the season, without even scoring.

But there was never any doubt Forge FC would eventually find their winning and scoring ways again, according to head coach Bobby Smyrniotis.

“We had two very good games to start, but obviously not the results we would want,” admitted Smyrniotis after Sunday’s game. “But this is a process. We wanted to come into this game, we wanted three points, and we want to keep a clean sheet. I think when you can add three goals to that, it just makes it a better win.

“We just needed a little bit more of that killer instinct in the box. And we showed that in this match.”

Three goals in ten minutes for Forge FC

Molham Babouli scored the game’s opening goal for Hamilton’s club in the 70th minute. Chris Nanco gave Forge a two-goal lead in the 75th minute before Tristan Borges wrapped things up, converting a penalty in 80th minute.

And Forge FC’s players shared their coach’s optimism going into Sunday’s game against the Vancouver Island club, according the game’s first goalscorer.

“We know it was coming,” said Babouli after the game. “We’ve been doing a lot of good things in training and in the past few games.

“We were missing a little bit of sharpness. We’ve got a couple games under us now. And hopefully we get the train going.”

Pacific’s first loss of 2021

It was Pacific’s first loss of the new year, having won one and drawn one.

But Pacific FC head coach Pa Modou Kah was still pleased with his club’s performance and is confident this squad will recover from Sunday’s loss.

“I think it was a fantastic performance,” said Kah. “Football is a cruel game . (We’ll) regroup and we go again. In football you get second chances. And we have 25 second chances left. We’re just going to keep rolling.”

“There’s a long season and a lot of football to play. So, there’s no worries on our side.”
